(STATEN ISLAND/BROOKLYN, NY) - Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis (NY-11) today released the following statement on New York State's $229 billion budget:

"After months of negotiations, Governor Hochul and Albany Democrats have shown they're incapable of doing what's in the best interest of New Yorkers when it comes to fiscal responsibility and public safety. By allowing New York to remain the only state in the nation where judges can't consider dangerousness, accompanied by no changes to discovery laws and Raise the Age, our leaders continue to put the safety of every single New Yorker at risk.

"The push to ban natural gas hookups in new construction will not only have a disastrous impact on our state's energy security in the event of severe weather but it's contrary to the free market and will force higher energy costs onto middle-class New Yorkers who need financial relief the most. Additionally, the State is yet again squeezing already struggling small businesses instead of working to rectify the MTA's financial irresponsibility and restore public safety to our transit system to gain more tourism and ridership.

"By placating to the far-left wing of her party, Governor Hochul has shown she's the weakest New York Governor in recent memory. This bloated budget proposal - which spends nearly twice as much as the state of Florida despite Florida having millions more residents - is another abject failure for the State of New York and its great people; no one should be surprised when New Yorkers continue to flee at a record pace."
