Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis has announced the winners of the 2024 Congressional App Challenge for New York’s 11th Congressional District. The winning team, composed of Chrystopher Guevara, Stephanie Reinozo, Jaylynn Perez, and Victoria Sanchez from New Utrecht High School in Brooklyn, developed an app called "Makers of Tomorrow."
The "Makers of Tomorrow" app is designed to help users create accessible STEM projects at home using everyday materials. Users can select projects from three subjects: Physics, Chemistry, or Geoscience. Upon completing a project, users receive a congratulatory sticker such as "Great Job!" Additionally, they can upload photos to a public album via Google Photos where others can comment, like, and share.
"I congratulate Chrystopher, Stephanie, Jaylynn, and Victoria for winning our office's Congressional App Challenge,” stated Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis. “For the past few years, I have been proud to host this challenge for high school students in our community, providing them with a platform to showcase their creativity and technical skills while encouraging them to explore STEM fields. I look forward to seeing how these students will continue to excel and contribute to our community and country."
Angela Yan and Britney Dong from New Dorp High School on Staten Island secured second place with their app "ShareBox." This app aims to assist individuals in need by directing them to nearby locations known as Share Boxes where they can access free necessities.
The "Makers of Tomorrow" app will be displayed in the Capitol Building as well as on House.Gov and the Congressional App Challenge's website for one year. The Congressional App Challenge is an annual nationwide competition sponsored by the Internet Education Foundation aimed at inspiring students to delve into STEM fields through practical experience.
