Navy veteran James A. Haynes III honored for extensive community service

James A. Haynes III enlisted in the United States Navy, serving with the Seabees and achieving the rank of Chief Petty Officer. Mr. Haynes served in Vietnam and has a long history of service to his nation. He was in active service from 1971 to 1973 at ACB-2 Little Creek, Virginia, and continued serving in the Navy from 1973 to 1992, retiring as a Second Class Equipment Operator with Reserve Construction Battalions 13 and 21.

Following active duty, Mr. Haynes began working for the U.S. Coast Guard at the Activities NY Engineering Division Utility Shop as a boiler plant equipment mechanic, retiring after 33 years. He served as the Union President for AFGE Local 2747, New York.

Mr. Haynes has a history of volunteering within the Staten Island community. He is an honored member of the A.O.H. Division 4, serving as President for three years, and was Richmond County President of the A.O.H. In recognition of his services to the Irish community of New York, Mr. Haynes was honored with the Commodore John Barry Award in 2003. He was the 2005 Grand Marshal of the Richmond County Saint Patrick’s Day Parade and received the Legion of Honor from the Chapel of Four Chaplains Museum.

He is an active member and officer of numerous organizations, including The United Staten Island Veterans Organization Inc., where he serves as Chief Executive Officer; Fleet Reserve Association Branch 226; and Staten Island Catholic War Veterans Post 1934. Additionally, he is a Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus member and served as Grand Knight of Knights of Columbus Richmond Council 351. He is also associated with Staff Sergeant Michael Olis VFW Post 9587 and Seabee Foundations.

In 2017, Mr. Haynes was elected Commander of DAV Halloran Memorial Chapter #34, where he currently serves.

Mr. Haynes chairs various events such as the Staten Island Memorial Day Parade and numerous fundraising activities including Evening of Honor. Annually, he visits local cemeteries to change veterans' flags.

A native Staten Islander born in Tompkinsville to James A. II and Louella Haynes (both deceased), Mr. Haynes married Christine; they have two sons—James IV and Christopher—and three grandchildren: Philip, Lindsay, and Abigail.

Of all his accomplishments, he expresses that he is most proud of his family for their constant support and love.
