(WASHINGTON, DC) - On July 17, 2023, Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis (NY-11) announced her office will be participating in the Congressional App Challenge for 2023. The Congressional App Challenge is an annual nationwide competition sponsored by the Internet Education Foundation to inspire students to explore STEM, coding, and computer science through hands-on practice. 

"I am excited that my office will once again be participating in the Congressional App Challenge," Malliotakis said. "This challenge engages the bright, young minds of our middle and high school students. It invites them to think critically about local, national, and global issues and allows them to apply their technical skills to develop ideas that could create a better future. My office is looking forward to the opportunity to receive and recognize the STEM, coding, and computer science talents in our district. The extraordinary submissions we received last year make me confident that we'll be blown away by the new submissions we receive!" 

2023 Congressional App Challenge Rules: 

• Students can create apps about any topic, using any programming language (e.g. C, C++, JavaScript, Python, Ruby, "block code,” etc.), on any platform (e.g. PC, web, tablet, robot, mobile). 
• AGE: Students must be in middle school or high school on November 1st, 2023 
• LOCATION: Students are only allowed to compete in a Congressional District which is hosting an App Challenge. Students may compete in either the district in which they reside, or the district in which they attend school. Participants may compete only in one single district. 
• TEAMS: Students can compete as individuals, or in teams of up to four (4) students.  
• Any team with more than four (4) students is not eligible to compete.  
• At least half of teammates on any team must live or attend school in the same Congressional District. 
• PRIOR PROJECTS: Students may submit any app they’ve created after November 1st, 2022 
• ONE ENTRY PER PERSON PER YEAR: Students may only submit ONE app per year. Multiple entries across multiple teams is not allowed.

Last year, Marta Bekirman from New Dorp High School won the 2022 Congressional App Challenge for New York's 11th Congressional District for developing the Student Tracker App. The App was coded using JavaScript and allows students of all ages to track their daily school activities, set assignment reminders, and search for community service events. Students would also be able to track the total number of hours studied and any study materials used.  The app has been displayed in the Capitol Building and the Congressional App Challenge's website for the past year.
