(WASHINGTON, DC) - Today Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis (NY-11) released the following statement regarding New York City Mayor Adams' suspension of the city's right-to-shelter rules that have allowed the city to provide private rooms for asylum seekers.

"As I've said for the past year, New York City's right-to-shelter law was intended for homeless New Yorkers, not citizens of other countries. I'm pleased that the Mayor has finally acknowledged that his plan to house migrants in luxury hotels is unsustainable and unfair to hard-working taxpayers, particularly when city services are being slashed and retiree health benefits diminished. This is a step in the right direction but much more needs to be done at both the city and federal level. Today, House Republicans will do our part to stem the flow of illegal immigration and pass a bill to reimplement effective border security measures and give our Border Patrol Agents the tools and technology they need to stop this unprecedented human and drug trafficking by the cartels. Senator Schumer should immediately bring this bill to the floor for a vote so we can stop the misguided and dangerous policies that have exploited women and children and taken the lives of both migrants and American citizens."

Malliotakis is a cosponsor of H.R.2, the Secure the Border Act of 2023, legislation that would require DHS to resume construction of the southern border wall, increase the number of Border Patrol agents, reform the asylum process and mandate the use of E-Verify, and prohibit the release of illegal immigrants apprehended at the southern border into the United States.
