Last week, members of SIUH visited the zoo and experienced a fun meet-and-greet with some of our animals and staff. Staten Island University Hospital and SIZ have an anti-venom sharing program; the hospital has toxicologists to treat patients that have been bitten by venomous snakes while the zoo houses the antivenin needed to treat those cases. Members of SIUH saw first hand what it takes to handle venomous animals as well as what a typical medical exam would look like on one, in this case, a rattlesnake. They also spent some time learning about Waffles the sloth and enjoyed the rest of the day walking around grounds. Thanks for all you do @siuhospital and all you continue to do.
