Anurag Das, MD, has pursued a career in urology, providing care to residents of Boston and Air Force servicemembers. He currently holds the position of chief of urology at Staten Island University Hospital (SIUH). In an interview with Northwell Connections, Dr. Das discussed advanced procedures such as aquablation and HIFU that he and his colleagues are performing to enhance patient care.
When asked about his interest in urology, Dr. Das credited his father as a significant influence: “My dad’s a doctor, and he’s my role model — at 89, he is still practicing medicine.” He expressed appreciation for the dual medical and surgical aspects of urology: “I like that urology is a specialty where the doctor can provide both medical and surgical treatment, which means you can first decide on the best approach for a given patient and then actually deliver it.”
Dr. Das also highlighted his educational background under Dr. John Grayhack at Northwestern: “I studied at Northwestern under Dr. John Grayhack, who was one of the gods of urology. He showed me that you could do great work and truly help your patients, and that there is great camaraderie in this small field.” The relationships formed with colleagues further motivated him to pursue this specialty: “Many of my colleagues became wonderful friends, and that also encouraged me to go into this field.”
