Staten Island University Hospital has appointed Joanna Pierro, DO, as associate chair of pediatrics, according to a Mar. 17 announcement from Northwell’s Staten Island University Hospital.
The appointment highlights Dr. Pierro’s leadership in pediatric hematology and oncology, medical education, and clinical care. In her new role, she will oversee clinical programs across the department of pediatrics, focusing on quality, safety, and performance initiatives while supporting faculty, residents, and advanced care providers. She is also tasked with guiding the strategic growth of pediatric subspecialty services and leading faculty development efforts.
Dr. Pierro will continue to provide patient care in both inpatient and outpatient settings and aims to strengthen collaboration with community pediatricians and regional partners. Jonathan Blau, MD, chair of the department of pediatrics at Staten Island University Hospital said: “Dr. Pierro brings exceptional clinical experience and a deep commitment to training the next generation of pediatricians. She has helped strengthen our pediatric hematology and oncology services, while expanding educational opportunities for our trainees and faculty.”
Pierro completed formal training as a medical educator through the American Society of Hematology’s Medical Educator’s Institute where she now serves as faculty. She remains active in clinical research as a study committee member for the Children’s Oncology Group ACCL1931 clinical trial evaluating levocarnitine to reduce asparaginase associated hepatotoxicity in high-risk acute lymphoblastic leukemia.
She recently became affiliate-site principal investigator for the Children’s Oncology Group at SIUH after it became an affiliate member through Cohen Children’s Medical Center. This marks the first time that Staten Island pediatric cancer patients can participate in national clinical trials through the Children’s Oncology Group.
Pierro is also a founding member and steering committee chair of v-SYMPHONY (the Virtual Symposium of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology of New York), which organizes educational events for pediatric fellows nationwide.
