Senator Andrew Lanza, a Republican representing Staten Island’s 24th District and serving as Senate Deputy Minority Leader, posted a series of statements on March 10, 2026, expressing concern over the financial impact of New York’s climate policies.
In his first post, Lanza cited figures from an official memo: “Here is what their memo admits: Gas prices could rise to $5.25 per gallon NYC families could see about $2,300 more annually on natural gas bills Upstate families heating with oil or natural gas could pay more than $4,100 extra every year 45% higher small business utility costs” (March 10, 2026).
He followed up by describing legislative efforts to counteract these anticipated increases: “My Senate Republican colleagues and I are fighting to repeal the CLCPA and stop the Cap-and-Invest tax before it hits your wallet even harder. We have introduced S.8607 to eliminate the legal mandate that is forcing these price spikes.” (March 10, 2026).
Lanza concluded his series by emphasizing shared environmental goals but reiterated concerns about affordability: “We all want cleaner air and a healthier future for our children. But this policy is driving up costs on working families right now, and the pressure is only growing.” (March 10, 2026).
Lanza has been active in advocating for community improvements such as school upgrades and park expansions on Staten Island (official website). He aligns with both the Republican and Conservative parties in New York State politics. In addition to his current leadership role in the Senate minority, he has served on committees including Rules, Judiciary, Ethics and Internal Governance, and Cities 1. His legislative work has also included measures addressing domestic violence prevention and crime victim rights.
The Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (CLCPA) is New York’s primary climate law aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions through mandates such as cap-and-invest programs. Critics like Lanza argue that these policies may result in increased energy costs for residents and businesses.
