Richmond University Medical Center (RUMC) has received a donation of $22,815 from Angels On The Bay, a nonprofit based in Queens. The funds are designated to support the hospital’s Wayne Zenna Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), which provides care for high-risk newborns.

Angels On The Bay was established over two decades ago by Frank Russo, Jr. in Howard Beach, Queens. The organization’s mission is to support healthcare programs and facilities that serve children. RUMC has had a long-term partnership with Angels On The Bay, and this year the organization will be recognized at RUMC’s annual gala for its ongoing support.

“I would like to thank Angels on the Bay from the bottom of my heart for their generous donation,” said Dr. Santosh Parab, Chief of Neonatology at RUMC. “Because of their kindness and generosity, we will be able to continue bringing hope, comfort, and vital resources to the tiniest and most vulnerable newborns as well as their families. I am grateful to everyone from Angels On The Bay, particularly Mr. Frank Russo and family, for making such a meaningful difference in the lives of the families we care for on Staten Island.”

The Wayne Zenna NICU at RUMC reports one of the highest survival rates in the country, with 997 out of every 1,000 admitted newborns surviving. As a certified Level III NICU, it provides comprehensive care for premature infants and those with complex conditions. The unit’s team has cared for newborns weighing as little as one pound, and offers access to pediatric subspecialists, advanced respiratory support, minor procedures, and imaging services.

The NICU is undergoing a full renovation to address increased demand. The $5.6 million project will expand the unit’s space, add 18 private bays for newborns, upgrade the nursing station, create a fully equipped isolation room, and offer a larger waiting area for families. Completion is expected by late next year or early 2027.

RUMC is a not-for-profit provider serving Staten Island’s diverse community, offering a wide range of health services.
