Nicole Malliotakis, U.S. Representative for New York’s 11th district, has used her social media platform to call attention to the effects of the ongoing government shutdown, focusing on its impact on food assistance programs and local communities.
On October 30, 2025, Malliotakis posted about her visit to a local organization: “Nicole visited Staten Island’s ACT Care Foundation to highlight the importance of the Senate ending this shutdown to prevent a lapse in SNAP that could impact 42 million Americans.”
The following day, she addressed the broader consequences of the shutdown for businesses and families: “This preventable government shutdown is now creating unnecessary hardship for local grocery stores, food pantries and the families who depend on them. @SenSchumer has to stop the political games, do the right thing, and simply vote for the same bill with the same language and” (October 31, 2025).
Later that day, Malliotakis highlighted additional disruptions caused by the shutdown: “These flight delays, a pause in SNAP benefits & federal employees not getting paid are all unnecessary pain inflicted on Americans by the Senate Democrats. @POTUS should step in again to help SNAP as he did with WIC & military pay.” (October 31, 2025).
Malliotakis has represented New York’s 11th District since 2021 after serving in the New York State Assembly from 2011 to 2021. She was born in New York City in 1980 and resides in Staten Island. Her educational background includes degrees from Seton Hall University and Wagner College.
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) provides food-purchasing assistance for millions of low-income Americans. Government shutdowns can threaten timely benefit distribution and disrupt services relied upon by vulnerable populations.
