Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis has announced that more than $9 million in federal funding will go to the Fire Department of the City of New York (FDNY) for upgrades to equipment and facilities in Staten Island and Brooklyn. The announcement was made alongside FDNY Commissioner Lillian Bonsignore and department leaders during visits to both boroughs.

The funding will support four major projects. In Staten Island, $5 million is allocated for renovating a building to be used as an EMS classroom training center, which aims to provide high-quality instruction for first responders closer to their home base. Another $2 million will fund renovations at FDNY Squad 8 Firehouse, the only squad company in Staten Island, ensuring firefighters have improved facilities to respond safely to emergencies. Additionally, $1 million is set aside for generator improvements at FDNY Engine 155/Ladder 78, helping maintain continuous operations during power outages or severe weather.

In Brooklyn, $1.23 million will be used for generator upgrades at FDNY Engine 284/Ladder 149/Satellite 3. This project is intended to strengthen emergency readiness during storms and outages.

“This year, I’m proud to have secured over $9 million for the FDNY to strengthen EMS training, modernize firehouse infrastructure, and support the brave men and women who protect our communities,” said Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis. “New York’s Bravest deserve the very best modern equipment, safe facilities, and the tools required to do their jobs effectively and safely.”

FDNY Commissioner Lillian Bonsignore expressed appreciation: “A heartfelt thanks to Congresswoman Malliotakis for her continued support of the Fire Department of New York. As we prepare to serve our communities for the next decades to come, this type of funding is crucial for our ability to do that. I also want to give a sincere thanks to you and those who worked on making sure that we have funding for our health benefits, for our World Trade Center Health Program. The people you see around me are heroes and they always will be, and it’s great when the communities come together to try to support them. Your support for the Fire Department does not go unnoticed and it is consistent and constant and we appreciate you.”

The new EMS training center on Staten Island addresses current limitations where personnel must travel long distances—often taking them out of service—to attend sessions at Randall’s Island or Fort Totten. The renovation aims not only to reduce commute times but also expand class sizes beyond what existing facilities can handle.

Renovations at Squad 8 Firehouse are designed with firefighter safety in mind by providing secure amenities such as upgraded kitchens that help crews recover between calls during their long shifts.

Generator upgrades at both Brooklyn’s Engine 284/Ladder 149/Satellite 3 facility and Staten Island’s Engine 155/Ladder 78 are considered essential due to aging infrastructure in many firehouses—some over a century old—and increasing frequency of extreme weather events.

Nicole Malliotakis has represented New York’s 11th Congressional District since replacing Max Rose in 2021 after previously serving in the New York State Assembly from 2011-2021. She was born in New York City in 1980, currently lives in Staten Island, graduated from Seton Hall University with a BA degree, and later attended Wagner College.
