Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis, together with 14 Republican colleagues, has addressed a letter to Frank Bisignano, the newly confirmed Commissioner of the Social Security Administration (SSA). The letter outlines their concerns about potential changes in services at local SSA offices, on the SSA website, and through the SSA’s 1-800 number.
The members of Congress expressed apprehension over recent staffing cuts and proposals that could further affect customer service. Although the SSA has stated there are no plans for permanent field office closures, its draft service delivery plan includes “field office consolidation.” Currently, 47 locations are listed as potential closure candidates on the Department of Government Efficiency’s website.
Initially, the agency intended to end over-the-phone verification but revised this decision. Instead, it will implement anti-fraud technology while maintaining phone-based certification. The letter emphasized ensuring uninterrupted services for seniors and individuals with disabilities who depend on SSA benefits. This concern is heightened by demographic shifts as all Baby Boomers will reach age 65 by 2030.
Signatories of the letter include Representatives Jeff Hurd (R-CO-3), Ryan Mackenzie (R-PA-7), Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA-1), Don Bacon (R-NE-2), Jeff Van Drew (R-NJ-2), Gabe Evans (R-CO-8), David Valadao (R-CA-22), Juan Ciscomani (R-AZ-6), Jen Kiggans (R-VA-2), Mike Ezell (R-MS-4), Michael Turner (R-OH-10), Rob Bresnahan Jr. (R-PA-8), Zach Nunn (R-IA-3), and Mike Lawler (R-NY-17).
