Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis said on Mar. 16 that she welcomes the U.S. Army’s decision to keep Brooklyn’s Harbor Defense Museum at Fort Hamilton Army Garrison open.
The announcement comes after concerns last year about the possible closure of the museum, which is located at New York City’s only active military installation. The museum highlights Fort Hamilton’s historical role in protecting New York Harbor and serves as an educational resource for the community.
“After previously calling on the U.S. Army to reconsider its decision last year, we are pleased that Brooklyn’s Harbor Defense Museum at Fort Hamilton will remain open. In our nation’s 250th anniversary year, it is especially important that our community has the opportunity to learn about Fort Hamilton’s role as New York City’s only active military installation and the role it has played throughout our nation’s history as a strategic location protecting New York Harbor,” Malliotakis said in her statement.
She added, “With the museum remaining open, visitors of all ages will continue to benefit from the important educational resources it provides. We look forward to continuing to work with the Army to preserve these artifacts so future generations can learn about and appreciate our rich military history and the significance of this historic fort in Brooklyn.”
Malliotakis has represented New York’s 11th district in Congress since 2021, after replacing Max Rose, according to available information. She also served in the New York State Assembly from 2011 to 2021 before joining Congress.
Malliotakis was born in New York City in 1980 and currently lives in Staten Island. She graduated from Seton Hall University with a Bachelor of Arts degree and later attended Wagner College.
