Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis has announced the allocation of $5.75 million in federal funding for upgrades at Staten Island’s St. George Ferry Terminal. This funding, secured through the Federal Transit Administration’s Passenger Ferry Grant Program, aims to support essential infrastructure projects at the terminal.
The Staten Island Ferry is a crucial part of New York City’s transit system, transporting approximately 70,000 passengers daily between Staten Island and Manhattan. The ferry serves as an important transportation link, connecting residents to various services and economic opportunities.
The allocated funds will be used for two main projects managed by the New York City Department of Transportation. The first project involves replacing deteriorating bus ramp passageways that have been affected by water intrusion and heavy use over time. These new structures are designed to offer better weather protection, improved safety, and increased accessibility for passengers transferring between different modes of transport.
The second project focuses on upgrading the terminal’s chillers with more energy-efficient models. These chillers are responsible for removing heat from water to cool the building. The new systems aim to enhance environmental control within maintenance areas, thereby improving working conditions and extending the lifespan of temperature-sensitive materials.
“Securing this critical investment is a major win for our community and will help improve the daily lives of my constituents,” stated Congresswoman Malliotakis. “The Staten Island Ferry is an essential transportation link, connecting nearly half a million Staten Islanders to jobs, services, and opportunities across the city. This funding will support long-overdue upgrades that enhance safety and improve the overall passenger experience.”
Malliotakis has been advocating for these improvements since 2024.
